Please Write Back:

Sexual Assault and America’s Students

Film Length: 30 minutes

Facilitation Guide available

“Please Write Back” offers a journey, both emotional and intellectual, to carry viewers through the complicated problem of sexual assault. Date rape, cyber-dating dangers, alcohol abuse, rape drugs, sexual exploitation, coercion, intimidation, acquaintance rape, same-sex assault . . . assumptions and presumptions . . . .men, women, minors, people of color . . . parties and residence halls . . . . Greeks and athletes . . . this film addresses the gamut of sexual violence issues, and the various demographics they involve and affect.

Narrated by Katie Koestner, a nationally renowned public speaker and date rape survivor, and Susan Marine, the Sexual Assault Response Coordinator at Harvard University; the film is the product of two years of intense creative effort. Rape crisis counselors, attorneys, sexual assault nurse examiners, students, survivors, activists and school administrators came together from across the country to create this incredible film. Katie has appeared on the cover of TIME Magazine, an HBO special, The Oprah Winfrey Show, Larry King Live, Lifetime TV, Good Morning America, and in person at over one thousand schools. Unlike many films on this subject, “Please Write Back” addresses men as a specific audience. Furthermore, every effort has been made to be inclusive of diverse backgrounds.

“Please Write Back” merges the riveting stories of four survivors with a thorough discussion of the definition of sexual assault. Viewers learn important facts and statistics as well as the implications of a definition based on consent between partners. The survivors’ stories range from Michael’s childhood sexual assault by a teacher, to Annann’s rape by a college acquaintance. A case study is included at the end to help viewers apply the knowledge they have just acquired.

The available video study guide provides ample teaching resources for facilitators working with any number of audiences, including a 9th grade health class, a first year college residence hall, or an introductory women’s studies course.
