When the students in the room shift from slouching to sitting up straight, they are listening. When they lean forward and rest their elbows on their knees, they are completely engaged. This is the way Katie Koestner’s “No-Yes” speech impacts audiences. Katie weaves the story of her date rape at age 18 with stories of sexual assault and empowerment from male and female students across North America. Katie achieves what school administrators and educators desire: behavior change and awareness; as well as what students respond to: reality and honesty.

How drunk is too drunk to give effective consent to sex? What are the consequences of wearing provocative clothing? Who is responsible for sexual communication? How can one person feel violated and the other think the same experience was consensual?
Jake and Erica are in the same Calculus class. They become study partners. One night they meet up at a party. Alcohol mixes with sex. Did someone cross the line, or did both behave irresponsibly? You decide.

Stephanie Greiner, has not only witnessed how sexual assault impacts our campuses, but has experienced it first hand. In the summer of 1997, during her sophomore year of college, Stephanie was sexually assaulted while she was under the influence of alcohol. In the weeks following the attack, Stephanie questioned her judgment, whether it was really sexual assault, and how she was going to get past the experience.

How would you respond if someone told you that he or she had been raped? Would you hug that person to provide comfort or would it be a better idea to give them distance? What questions would you ask to be helpful while remaining unobtrusive and nonjudgmental?
These are important questions to consider when one considers the fact that sexual assault affects 1 out of every 4 women and 1 out of every 8 men. Learn how to assist a sexual assault victim, from medical assistance to rebuilding trust.
