How drunk is too drunk to give effective consent to sex? What are the consequences
of wearing provocative clothing? Who is responsible for sexual communication?
How can one person feel violated and the other think the same experience
was consensual?
Jake
and Erica are in the same Calculus class. They become study partners.
One night they meet up at a party. Alcohol mixes with sex. Did someone
cross the line, or did both behave irresponsibly? You decide.
The story of Jake and Erica represents an all too common experience
among students. This program engages the audience in a sophisticated
discussion of the issues surrounding sexual assault. Students use evaluative
skills to apply the definition of sexual assault to this challenging
case study. Both men and women have a voice.
The testimony of Erica and Jake provides the reality that students
need to engage with an issue. Our presenters gets
students talking and thinking as we skillfully and entertainingly
confront common rape myths and tear down conventional defenses
around acquaintance rape. We achieve the difficult goal of
decreasing male defensiveness without being staged or preachy. Emphasis is on the importance of setting standards and expectations,
both personally and as a community. The
program closes with a strong message regarding the legality of
certain behaviors. Students learn the consequences
of leaving romantic situations to the realm of assumptions and beer
goggles. Community members learn to take responsibility
not only for their own behavior, but also for others, fostering
trust and respect.
Post-program single-sex break-out groups are available to tackle additional gender specific concerns.
